Collaboration

The final piece of the Resilience puzzle is around Collaboration. This is a particular favourite of mine as it is speaks to the idea of belonging, which is my "big word".

Bessel van der Kolk says "Being able to feel safe with other people is the single most important aspect of mental health."

He is right. It is a primary survival instinct, of absolute necessity. And it relates directly to the concept of psychological safety in the workplace. Feeling safe to be innovative without fear of isolation as a result.

We cannot collaborate without this safety. Collaboration is about the critical need of the human brain to have close and secure connections with others.

At work, open collaboration requires:

  • Freedom to share information and ideas with colleagues

  • Two-way feedback between people and leaders

  • Opportunities to weigh in on decisions

  • Strong interpersonal connections (trust) with teammates
