Burnout is preventable

In their study Leading Through Burnout (Wiens & McKee, 2016) the authors discovered that managing stress with an approach that centred on emotional awareness can help to prevent burnout.

Importantly, they point out that stress and burnout are not the same thing. After all, stress is not a mental health condition, it is merely a state of being. In fact, we need a certain amount to function. Much like a guitar or violin string. Without tension and stress it is useless but, with too much, it will snap.

Chronic or unmanageable stress can lead to burnout, but burnout can also be managed by tapping into your emotional intelligence.

Emotional Intelligence supports superior coping abilities and helps people deal with chronic stress and prevent burnout.

What strategies do you have to prevent overwhelm and burnout? Sharing stories can help everyone overcome the debilitating issue of stigma in the workplace around mental health.
